How the Pandemic Has Affected Event Insurance and What to Expect in 2021

Insurance providers and planners have clashed since the start of the pandemic over potential payouts. Now, coverage is getting more expensive, but the most worrying risk, the pandemic, is being removed from protections. Insurance is important, however coverage for the most likely situations tends to make it more expensive.  The insurance industry is also not built for mass payouts, which it faced in 2020, and as such these ramifications will continue to affect policies. As planners work to bring back in-person events, it's important to revisit the question of event insurance and understand its implications moving forward. Marriott International Announces Passing of President & CEO Arne M. Sorenson

It was announced on February 15, that beloved Marriott International president and CEO, Arne M. Sorenson, had passed away after losing his battle with pancreatic cancer. Sorenson became the third CEO in the company's history and the first without the Marriott surname back in 2012.  He helped put the company on a growth trajectory that included the $13 billion acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts. Sorenson is known for his leadership on national and global issues, and his compassion for his fellow coworkers. Learn about Sorenson's legacy here. 

Music Venue Trust Backs Call for Rapid Testing in Order to Reopen Music Venues

At a Downing Street press conference on Monday, February 15,  the Prime Minister said "rapid" tests could be used by "those parts of the economy" that were unable to reopen their doors last year. The Music Venue Trust has backed Boris Johnson‘s suggestion that rapid coronavirus testing could be the key to reopening music venues, and says the necessary plans are in place for it to be rolled out nationwide. The MVT CEO Mark Davyd said that the organization is ready for a rapid testing system to be rolled out. Learn more about this new development for the music industry here. 

The Role of Vaccines in the Travel Rebound: Latest Skift Recovery Index

As more and more people receive a COVID vaccine world wide, the travel industry is crossing its fingers to see how vaccinations will impact their recovery.  The Skift Recovery Index has started tracking the rate of vaccination in the 22 countries covered in the Index, to see if there is any correlation between vaccination rates and travel recovery. As of now, only a few countries have shown a low correlation coefficient at 0.25, meaning there is little correlation between vaccinations and travel performance. However, this is assumed at the time, as there are still many lockdowns and travel restrictions in place hindering travel. Track the index and view additional insights here.
